A Gerry Jones Nighthawk Legacy

There is a wealth of great architecture in the greater Phoenix, Arizona area, but none is influenced more greatly than the architectural interpretations of Gerry Jones, who is affectionately known as Moses because he laid out the original land planning for the town of Carefree – well before there were any home sites on the northeast slope of Black Mountain. Jones’ distinctive and eclectic designs interpretations incorporate indigenous materials from the extreme mountain terrain that he has come to know and love intimately.

With 68 years of experience in architecture and construction, as well as 17 years teaching extreme terrain mountain design at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, Jones shows no signs of slowing down and thus, has breathed life onto the original 27 acres owned by a friend and now known as Nighthawk. “I laid out this acreage into 9 building sites. Nighthawk is a quiet gated community nestled into the northeast side of Black Mountain containing only nine multi-acre lots. This distinctive 3.15 acre setting – the largest site in Nighthawk – includes lush Sonoran vegetation and huge granite boulders that I incorporated from the excavation building site.”

This home began as a spec house that Jones desired to create knowing the difficulty of the terrain. “I took it on as a personal challenge to make it happen; today, mountainous terrain home design is my forté,” said the famed architectural designer, renowned for fashioning this lasting gem as well as many other home designs of his that are currently on display at the Cave Creek Museum.

What is truly unique is that Nighthawk displays the Jones concepts of modern design that is low in maintenance and whose unique masonry construction will last a century. Tim Larson of La Casa Builders brought the architect’s vision to life; together they represent the best in both architecture and custom construction. The residence, designed in harmony with nature, rests gently into the curves and rocks of the land. In fact, Jones used boulders and rocks and incorporated them in the walls with the background of Black Mountain always apparent. Even the back patio and outdoor dining area is placed to be among the natural rocks and boulders. “Nighthawk has utilized what I love such as texture, shadow lines, colors of interior and exterior that blend in with rocks and sandy terrain while the angular walls reflect the spectacular scenery.”

The beauty of this 5,270 square foot 5 bedroom, 5.5 bath masterpiece includes long slender lines, Jones’ trademark intricate standing seam roof, deep overhangs for shade, and extensive windows embracing views of Black Mountain and its surrounding valley. Fourteen skylights placed strategically throughout the residence soften the midday light. And when the sun moves, it gives the northwest-facing house the shadows and patterns of glorious sunsets without looking directly into the sun. The elaborate fireplaces and water features filter into the lower level guest suite with its own kitchenette.

In addition to its beauty, this architectural masterpiece and legacy home is built far beyond legal code, using construction standards that will allow it to remain structurally sound for 125 to 150 years. Green building materials and energy saving features keep operating costs to a minimum. Interior features are low maintenance yet high in quality.
