The 17th Annual Palm Beach Auction in April marked the Scottsdale-based company’s largest three-day Florida event, posting 632 vehicles for $30-plus million –– an impressive 98.9-percent sell-through-rate.
In addition, 258 pieces of automobilia generated almost $500,000, and $550,000 was raised for charity from the sale of three vehicles. Approximately 1,500 bidders attended as well as many gate attendees.
Resto-Mods remain in high demand, including the auction leader, a 1947 Buick Super 8 Custom Convertible (Lot #735), which brought $412,500. Other cars in the top 10 were three Chevys: a 1957 Bel Air Custom Hardtop (#731), $286,000; 1964 Corvette Custom Coupe (#734), $275,000; and a 1970 Chevelle Custom Convertible (#730), $253,000.
“The atmosphere on Super Saturday in Palm Beach felt like it did back in Scottsdale, with excitement fueled in part by the sale of dozens of world-class Resto-Mods,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson, which also produces annual auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona; Mohegan Sun in Connecticut; and Las Vegas, Nevada. “Our 17th Annual Barrett-Jackson Auction was one for the history books.”
The top 10 vehicles sold during the 2019 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction also included a 2012 Lexus LFA (#742), $352,000; 2018 McLaren 720s (#743), $324,500; 2005 Ford GT (#740), $275,000; and a 1967 Shelby Cobra CSX 4000 Roadster (#745), $231,000.
The next generation of collector car buyers, Gen-Xers and Millennials, showed continuing interest in 1980s and 1990s performance cars, such as a 1989 Porsche 930 Turbo Cabriolet (#727), $143,000; 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra R ( #674.1), $132,000; and a 1994 Toyota Supra Turbo Liftback ( #680.1), $62,700.
“This rising generation of collectors has been watching our auctions on television, igniting a new wave of passion for this incredible hobby,” says Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson.
A trio of Palm Beach charity cars sold: 2015 Petty’s Garage Ford Mustang GT ( #3000) $110,000, for Wounded Warrior Project; Jeff Gordon’s 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (#3001), $350,000, for Jeff Gordon Children’s Foundation; and 2010 Ford Mustang AV-X10 Custom Coupe “Dearborn Doll” (#3002), $90,000, to benefit the Paul Walker charity Reach Out WorldWide (ROWW). With these, Barrett-Jackson has now raised $115-plus million for charity.
