The memory of the great Carroll Shelby was center stage at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2021, when his personally built 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake (Lot #1396) led all car sales, bringing $5,500,000.
Held at WestWorld of Scottsdale, March 20–27, Barrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, posted a 100-percent sell-through, with 1,054 vehicles selling for $95-plus million, more than 1,000 pieces of automobilia, $4.4 million, and $5.8 million through the sale of charity vehicles.
More than 95 world-record auction sales were achieved, and the Barrett-Jackson Cup honoring custom car and truck builders triumphantly returned, with in excess of 25,000 online automotive fans voting during auction week.
“It was wonderful to be back among our friends and family in the collector car community,” says Craig Jackson, CEO and president of Scottsdale-based Barrett-Jackson. “The pandemic challenged us all in different ways, which is why it was great to reconnect and celebrate this passion we all love so much. With so many auto shows and traditional events cancelled over the past year, we were thrilled to provide a stage for the world’s top automakers to showcase their latest vehicles.”
A 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 (Lot #1394) was the second leading sale at $2,475,000 and a 2018 Ford GT ’67 Heritage Edition (Lot #1408) third at $1,210,000.
Continuing a strong market strength for Ford GTs, a 2017 (Lot #1377) sold for $990,000 and a 2005 Ford GT (Lot #1415), $440,000. Also in the top 10 were three Chevrolet Corvettes: a 1959 Custom Convertible (Lot #1358), $825,000; 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Split-Window Coupe (Lot #1414), $451,000; and a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Custom Convertible (Lot #1367), $440,000.
To support a number of charities nationwide, the auction sold eight VIN 001 and first production vehicles –– another auction record. Leading these was a 2022 GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 VIN 001 (Lot #3007), which raised $2.5 million for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. In its 50 years, Barrett-Jackson has helped raise more than $133 million for 130-plus local and national charitable organizations.
The Barrett Jackson Cup presented by eBay Motors saw the “Ultimate Best in Show” awarded to “Havoc,” a custom 1970 Dodge Challenger with 2,000 horsepower, owned by Robert Zahabi from Queensland, Australia. Rides by Kam, also based in Queensland, built the stallion.
The automobilia pieces included more than 60 original neon porcelain signs, 35-plus superbly restored gas pumps and many fine items from the Larry Winkler and Laguna Euro collections. These were led by two Sinclair Oil pieces: a 1964 New York World’s Fair Mold-A-Rama Machine (Lot #9488.2), $115,000, and 1960 Porcelain With Animated Neon Sign (Lot #9495), also $115,000.
“In addition to reconnecting with many of our longtime friends this week, we also welcomed a wave of new collectors into the hobby. Many of these first-time auction bidders are gravitating towards Resto-Mods and customs, and they are also finding a deep appreciation for original cars,” says Steve Davis, president of Barrett-Jackson. “We’re honored to be at the forefront of expanding the hobby and bringing more enthusiasts into the collector car family.”
